It’s that time of the year again when the new school year is upon us. The best gift we can give our children this new school season is prayer. We invite God’s presence and protection for our children when we pray these 11 Back to School Prayers.

The school year brings with it much learning, playing, and growth but our hearts are filled with a mix of excitement and apprehension as we learn to let go of our kids and trust the Lord to guide, lead, and protect them.

Our schools are filled with threats of violence, bullying, and pressure to perform so it’s no wonder that this time of year brings fear of the unknown, anxiety, stress, and emotions for both adults and children. But even for homeschool moms, starting a new chapter brings its own challenges.

That’s why we turn to God in prayer so we can find comfort, encouragement, strength, direction, peace, and more in this time of transition. Whether you’re looking for prayers for students, prayers for teachers and school staff, and prayers for parents this collection of prayers and verses of scripture will help you prepare for the coming year.

The Power of Prayer

Prayer is a very powerful and important spiritual discipline God has given us to get close to Him. It’s also a powerful way of fighting the schemes of the devil. The truth is prayer really does change things and helps us grow spiritually as well.

The Bible tells us here to “Watch and Pray” with perseverance in Ephesians 6:18. Sometimes we wonder how we can serve more in God’s kingdom. Well, going to battle for our children in prayer is one way.

So as our children go back to school, prayer is very important. We need to ensure our prayers cover them- their minds, bodies, and souls so that they are equipped to handle a new school year.

What happens in the times we don’t know what to pray though? The good news is even in the face of our weakness trusting always that the Holy Spirit prays in and for us when we can no longer find the right words or even the will to pray.

11 Important Back to school prayers

In the face of unpredictable realities, prayer is one of the best ways we can find peace, direction, and strength in the new things that lie ahead.

Our children are so precious and they have so much potential to do big things in their lives. That’s why the enemy of our souls targets them to steal, kill, and destroy their future.

At the start of school, as their parents and guardians let’s pray for them and speak a blessing over them. It’s also important to pray for ourselves as parents and for the entire school community that’s involved in molding and shaping the next generation of students.

One of the most powerful ways to pray is through Bible verses and that’s exactly what we’ll be doing.

1. Back to school prayer for teachers

But those who wait on the Lord
Shall renew their strength;
They shall mount up with wings like eagles,
They shall run and not be weary,
They shall walk and not faint.

Isaiah 40:31

Teachers play a crucial role in shaping our children’s behavior and thoughts. If you’ve ever wondered how you can bless your children’s teachers, prayer is definitely one of the wonderful; ways of doing that. Even at school, teachers play a parenting role so we must pray for them.

Heavenly Father, thank you for all the teachers that you have given a special and important role in our children’s lives. As they go back to school, teachers are faced with a lot of work, pressure, and challenges. We pray that may You strengthen, sustain guide, equip, and help them to bear the work they have before them.

May the words of their mouths be filled with the speech that’s always gracious and seasoned with salt. Help them to know our children in personal ways so they can mold them and guide them to fulfill their purpose.

Give them a servant spirit of greatness and rest when they need it. Bless them with kindness and patience to deal with our children. And more importantly, give them tender care and love for our children as they are an extension of us as parents.

May our children obey them, be a blessing to them, and contribute to the flourishing of their teachers.

In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen

2. Short Back to School Prayer for Teachers

This is a wonderful prayer W. David O. Taylor,  an author, and Professor of Theology on behalf of teachers. It’s a great one to pray on behalf of our teachers.

O Lord, you who have called and equipped the teachers in our community, we pray for them today. Watch over them, provide for them, guide them, and sustain them. May you be their sun and shield, so that they might do the work that you have entrusted to them and sense your care in these uncertain times. In Jesus’ name. Amen. – W. David O. Taylor

3. Prayer for school staff

The school staff includes cleaners, gardeners, school counselors, medical professionals, security personnel, and more. We must pray for God to give them the right spirit and attitude as they are a big part of the school community and the wellbeing of the children.

Dear God, we thank you for the school staff that you’ve given to our children’s school. Give them generous hearts with their skills and time. Help them to remember that as they take care of the school and our kids they’re contributing to the wellbeing of the whole community.

When they experience frustrated school-related relationships teach them to trust your leading and walk in the way of unity that only the Spirit of God can make possible. As they deal with all sorts of things, give them strength, and wisdom to endure their daily work. In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

4. Short Back to school prayers for school administrators

This short prayer is specifically for the school administration team as they handle different things daily including making important decisions that impact our children and dealing with external service providers and lawmakers. Let’s keep them in our prayers as we approach the new school season.

O God, you who have promised wisdom to all who would ask it, we pray today for school administrators, that you would grant them clarity of mind, unity of spirit, strength of will, a heart of wisdom, and the gift of your truth-bearing Spirit, so that they might be enabled to make decisions that lead to the flourishing of their teachers, staff, and students and to the wellbeing of the whole community. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen. – W. David O. Taylor

5. Prayer for the first day of school for students

The first day of school is a special one where parents, teachers, and students are excited, worried, and nervous. Talk about mixed feelings! I remember the first day of pre-school for our firstborn. She was so shy and scared going in but she came out so excited and full of stories of meeting new friends and her teacher.

It’s an even more special experience if the first day of school is the first one for nursery students or kindergarten, pre-school, primary school, middle school, high school, or college students. Those are important times of transition for parents and students.  A lot more emotions and preparations are involved and our need for God’s guidance and blessing is more apparent.

First impressions count. If our children have an awful first day of school, it sets their expectations for the rest of the school year and they might resist going back to school. That’s why it’s important to pray especially for that first day of school.

Dear Lord, thank you for bringing our children safely into the new school year. It’s a new day and season for them. We ask that You protect and guide them as they find themselves in a new school environment with new subjects, teachers, and friends. I pray that their light will shine for all to see their good deeds and hearts.

Grant them the strength of will and courage through the different things they may face today. Give them clarity of mind, wisdom, and the peace of Christ on this school day and throughout the term or semester.

May they be healthy with smiling faces so they can make true friends. Keep them focused, organized, diligent, and hardworking throughout the school year.
In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

6. Prayer for the protection of children

“He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High
Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress;
My God, in Him I will trust.””

Psalm 91:1-2

We need physical, mental, and spiritual protection for our children in the school community they find themselves in. We know the enemy only intends to harm them but we stand in the promises of God as we pray.

Today in schools there’s all kinds of danger- violence, physical bullying, cyber-bullying, and the risk of infections and diseases. Only God can protect our children at all times.

Dear God, we worship and praise Your holy name. You alone are our refuge and the only safe place we can truly rely on.  We stand in the gap for our children as they go back to school. Protect their minds from worldly lust through your holy word and give them an eternal perspective throughout their time at school.

As they leave home today, may they dwell under the shadow of Your wings. Watch over their coming and going. Cover them with Your feathers and be their spiritual shelter. Send Your angels to surround and fight for our children in the presence of danger. We put our trust in You Lord.

In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

7. Special Prayer for friends

Do not be deceived: “Evil company corrupts good habits.”

1 Corinthians 15:33

“As iron sharpens iron,
So a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.”

Proverbs 27:17

There’s no doubt about it- having good friends is important to the development and character of our children.  We need to teach our children to be able to choose good friends that support the values we’re teaching them at home.

As parents, we need diligence and vigilance at all times when it comes to the company our children keep.

O Lord, we pray that our children will be surrounded by godly and loyal friends. Friends that will sharpen their character, have a passion for the things of God, and help them become better people.

Bring the right friends to them and when they’re not able to, may we as their parents be able to guide them to have true friends. May our children also display the fruit of the spirit and be positive influences to their friends.

In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen

8. Back to school Prayer for Strength and Guidance

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

Philippians 4:13

Schoolwork can be hard for our children. We need to pray for God to strengthen them to keep going and for guidance on how to do the work they’re given. We must trust God to renew their strength and believe that in God, they really can do ALL things as He will guide and help them.

Dear Jesus, we humbly ask that You may strengthen and guide them to do their schoolwork. Even when they face new challenges, feel scared or discouraged may they rely on You to renew their strength and passion for school. Sustain them and show our children the right path this school year.

May they not become weary of doing the hard things but remember there’s a reward in their hard work. Even when the schoolwork is tough because it’s a new year, may they see this as an opportunity to learn and grow. We pray that they develop new skills that will support their next step in their schooling.

In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

9. Going back to school Prayer for Wisdom

And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.

Luke 2:52

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.

James 1:5

When children are wise, they can choose godly friends, refrain from giving up on themselves and their studies, and experience God’s blessing.

The Bible has an open invitation for us to ask God for wisdom if we’re lacking it and He will give it to us. In the same way, God gave wisdom to King Solomon in the Bible when He asked for it, He can do the same for our children as well.

Dear Lord as our children go back to school, give them wisdom to make the right choices in different situations. Guide them so that they grow to be wise and win the favor of both men and God.  Increase their knowledge, insight, and understanding and direct their paths.

Guard their minds against harmful instruction, grant them discernment to recognize the truth, and let your light shine in their hearts. May they have the fear of the Lord as it’s the beginning of wisdom. May the meditations of their hearts be acceptable in your sight.

In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

10. Back to School Prayer for Parents

“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

Jeremiah 29:11

As parents, it’s easy for our minds to wander off and entertain our worst fears about what could happen when our children leave home. But there is a better way to approach things. We can pray, trust God, and hold onto His promises in the Holy Gospel.

Heavenly Father, we choose to trust you with our children. We place them in Your loving arms for we know Your plans for them are good to give them hope and a future. May the thoughts of my mind be fixed on your promises.

Help us to be calm, and brave even when we’re afraid and strong even when we face the unknown. May the peace of God rule in our hearts as we let go of our children and allow them to learn, play, and grow at school.

In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

11. Back to school prayer for Homeschooling parents

Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.

Hebrews 10:23

It’s an honor to be able to teach our children in the comfort of the home. As the new school year starts, we need to ask the Lord for his help, so we do our best to teach our kids, find joy in each day and give us wisdom for different situations.

Dear Jesus, I come before you with a spirit of gratitude because you’re always with us in our home. We seek your guidance in the process of homeschooling.

Give me joy, patience, and understanding for the needs of my child. Help my children to feel the wonder of our subject matter in a fresh way and to be gracious with themselves in the light of mistakes that they may make. May the process of homeschooling make our parent-child bond deeper.

In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

In this dark world, we live in, it’s more important now than ever before to cover children in prayer. As we are preparing school supplies for the school year, let us also prepare our hearts and those of our children to face the future with wisdom, strength, hope, and faith. Let’s pray for godly friends and His protection.

We can’t be everywhere with our children, but God can. These Back to School prayers will help put them back safely in God’s hands.

It’s also important to remember the teachers and school staff who play an important role in the running of the school and have an impact on the next generation. Prayer helps us trust God above all else for all our needs.

Happy Back to School season!
