11 Unique Gratitude Journal Prompts

Gratitude gets us through the hard stuff. To reflect on your blessings is to rehearse God’s accomplishments. To rehearse God’s accomplishments is to discover his heart. To discover his heart is to discover not just good gifts but the Good Giver.

Max Lucado

Having an attitude of gratitude goes a long way in helping us cope in difficult times. Becoming thankful brings joy to our lives because we can focus on what we do have and the many blessings God has given us.

Journaling through the things we are grateful for is a great way to get started in developing an attitude of gratitude. Sometimes though, thinking of what we are grateful for can be difficult.

I know for me once I thank God for my life, my family and material possessions, I can quickly run out of what else to be thankful for.

This is where gratitude journal prompts come in!

Gratitude journal prompts act as ‘thought starters’ to guide us and remind us of what else we need to be grateful for. The Bible is full of unique blessings we need to be thankful to God for.

When we look at just 1 Chapter in the Bible Psalm 103 we find that God has given us a lot of benefits and blessings we can be thankful for. These would be great to use in your Journal!

11 Gratitude Journal Prompts (from Psalm 103)

1. God has forgiven all our iniquities

Our sins are forgiven  through the death of Jesus Christ on the Cross. Not some of our sins but all of our sins. The fact that we are free from the guilt and shame that comes from sin is something that we should be grateful for.

Forgiveness is not easy for us as believers. But when we remember that all our iniquities have been forgiven, it helps us to be able to forgive those who offend or have offended us. This is a great post on how to forgive someone who hurt you.

2. God has healed all our diseases

My mom tells the story of how I fell sick with meningitis when I was a baby. And how she had to sleep on the hospital floor for days while I got treatment (the struggle was real) . The situation was so serious that the doctors thought I wouldn’t make it. So when I look at my life today, I know for sure it’s a miracle.

There has been many more diseases that God has healed me from. I grew up being asthmatic but now that’s a thing of the past. And I had a condition called pre-eclampsia during my first pregnancy. Again doctors thought I would die, yet here I am, a living miracle.

God is a healer. What diseases has he healed you from? It’s important to remember all the diseases God has healed us from and give thanks to Him when we journal.

3. God has redeemed our lives from destruction

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 6:23

What we deserved as sinners before God saved us by His grace was death. We were doomed, destined for death and destruction. Separated from God in this life and the next life.

But God has redeemed us and given us eternal life. We can live abundantly and our future is secure now. What a reason to express gratitude to God!

4. We’ve been crowned with lovingkindness and tender mercies

We have been initiated and ordained with God’s mercies, love and kindness. God chooses to have compassion on us. He is caring and calm towards us and we ought to show our gratitude to Him.

5. We are satisfied and renewed daily

God gives us all we need- physically and spiritually. He has blessed us with all spiritual blessings. We are His children so He knows what we need and ensures we are provided for.

More than that, we are being renewed day by day to become like Jesus. Just like the eagles, even though life may be tough, we don’t grow weary and faint but in fact, we are strengthened by the trials of this life.

We welcome challenges and hard times because they provide opportunities for us to grow in our faith and trust more in God. It’s not easy though.

These are encouraging Psalms to read for strength in tough times.

Being satisfied and renewed by God is such a unique gratitude journal prompt that we wouldn’t usually think about. Yet, it’s true and definitely something we should take note of daily.

Gratitude produces deep, abiding joy because we know that God is working in us, even through difficulties

6. God executes righteousness and justice towards us

The Lord God fights for us- battles that we do not see. There’s spiritual battles happening and the Lord is defending and protecting us.

Through the blood of Jesus we have been made righteous- that means we have a right standing with God and we have been reconciled to Him.

We need to be thankful to God for His righteousness and justice.

7. God has shown us great mercy and grace that we don’t deserve

The amazing grace God has shown us is undeserved. We sinned against Him and He still loved us though He is Holy and without sin. In fact God hates sin.

Despite that, His mercies towards us are fresh and new each morning. Our hearts are full of gratitude because we experience His mercy and grace daily.

8. God doesn’t deal with us according to our sins

Imagine if God would actually punish us according to what our sins deserve? Where would we find ourselves? In deep trouble, I can tell you that.

The fact that God doesn’t punish us the way we deserve is something we should be thankful for daily!

9. God knows and understands us

Being known is one of the greatest human needs we have. The fact that God as our Creator knows us is something to be grateful for. He remembers that we are dust and so He understands us.

Jesus Christ became man so He could be like us and go through everything we do. He empathizes with us.

We can offer Him gratitude for knowing and understanding us! Now that’s a unique gratitude journal prompt.

“Gratitude is an offering precious in the sight of God, and it is one that the poorest of us can make and be not poorer but richer for having made it

A.W Tozer

10. God’s mercy continues from generation to generation

When we love and fear God, His mercy and grace doesn’t just end with us. We leave that legacy for our children. God’s mercy is from everlasting to everlasting and continues to our children and their children. What an awesome God we serve!

11. God reigns

The God we serve is a powerful God. His Kingdom is established in heaven and it rules over all the kingdoms on earth as well. We are thankful to God because He reigns!

My Encouragement to you

These 11 Gratitude Journal Prompts are unique because we wouldn’t ordinarily think about them. But this is the power of God’s word. If one chapter can give us so much to be thankful for, imagine all the treasures in the Bible that can help us with more gratitude journal prompts.

Instead of focusing on the troubles of this world, perhaps we should re-focus all that time, thought and energy into all of God’s blessings and being grateful to Him. It sure does make a difference!

Let’s Pray

God, you a merciful and gracious Father and I bless your Holy name! Thank you for giving me so many undeserved blessings. I am so thankful to you that you a Giver, forgiver of sins and you love me. Teach me to develop a heart and attitude of gratitude in all things.

In Jesus name I pray. Amen
