We all face difficult seasons in life. It could be the loss of a loved one, a diagnosis, a relationship, or financial difficulties. In those hard times, we can lose our joy and hope for the future. We doubt if God even sees us and knows what we’re going through and our prayer life is negatively affected.

But it’s important to remember that the Bible can help us in those tough seasons. It’s a source of comfort, hope, and strength when we feel weak and overwhelmed. The Lord’s arms are always open to uphold us.

King David was a man who went through very tough situations in the course of his life and at times felt discouraged. He authored many of the Book of Psalms and shared with us these 25 Encouraging Psalms for Strength in hard times.

As we read through these powerful psalms and reflect on their message we will be reminded of the presence of God which is with us always. His word offers us guidance which we can choose to cling to. You’ll also be reminded that these temporary seasons grow your faith and offer an opportunity to trust in the Lord and His amazing power

The Power of the Psalms

These Bible verses are the best sources of Biblical encouragement in the midst of hard times. David was a worshipper so this book contains prayers, poems, and hymns. In them we see him praising God and being honest about what he was feeling and going through.

Psalms has some of the Bible’s most famous verses which offer deep worship because they’re from the heart. They’re full of hope, thanksgiving, joy, and peace. Reading through it will help us pray God’s word when we’re struggling with words to express how we feel.

Even Apostle Paul encouraged the New Testament church to read and practice the psalms.

“Speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord,”

Ephesians 5:19 NKJV

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.”

Colossians 3:16 NKJV

25 Encouraging Psalms for strength in hard times

No one willingly ever wants to go through a tough season of life. Whether it’s the death of someone close, a divorce, a troubled marriage, parenting a difficult teenager or addict, financial difficulties, or health challenges, it’s easy to think God has deserted us. But the truth is, He never does.

We go through hard times just like Jesus Christ, Job, Joseph, and many others in the Bible. God allows suffering for a purpose. He uses these seasons to build our character, our purpose, and ultimately for His glory.

“And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.”

1 Peter 5:10 NIV

Just like David, when life is challenging and your heart is so heavy that you feel weak and powerless, the Lord will strengthen you with His Word.

These Encouraging Psalms Verses will remind us of what a mighty God we serve. We can rejoice and praise Him when we remember that “This too shall pass“. We can trust in God because we know He is for us; He is within us and He goes before us.

5 Encouragement Psalms for Difficult Seasons

In tough situations, we can forget who we are and the faithfulness of God in our lives. That’s why we need to be reminded of God’s promises and the truth from His Word.

“Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy!
I look to you for protection.
I will hide beneath the shadow of your wings
until the danger passes by.”

Psalms 57:1 NLT

“How precious is your unfailing love, O God!
All humanity finds shelter
in the shadow of your wings.”

Psalms 36:7 NLT

The love of God encourages us as we go through our greatest struggles. He protects us and keeps us safe. The Lord is a strong refuge when trouble comes. He is close to those who trust in Him.

“The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe.”

Proverbs 18:10 ESV

“Cast your burden on the Lord,
And He shall sustain you;
He shall never permit the righteous to be moved.”

Psalm 55:22 NKJV

There is power in the name of Christ Jesus. In Him, we find encouragement and strength. He will sustain you as you throw all your troubles on Him. When we abide by His word, we can have great confidence in Him that he won’t allow us to be shaken.

“Those who sow with tears
 will reap with songs of joy.”

Psalm 126:5 NIV

5 Psalms for Strength When You’re Weak

These Psalm Verses About Strength ensure that we don’t give up no matter what. They remind us that we should trust in God because He is all-powerful.

Nothing that happens to us is a surprise to God. He will support and strengthen us when we’re weak. May the joy of the Lord encourage you and be your strength in this season.

“God is our refuge and strength,
an ever-present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam
and the mountains quake with their surging.
There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
the holy place where the Most High dwells.
God is within her, she will not fall;
God will help her at break of day.
Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall;
he lifts his voice, the earth melts.
The Lord Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.”

Psalm 46:1-7 NIV

This passage of scripture shows the power of God. He dwells in the most holy place and all authority belongs to him. He is in control of all things so even when we feel like our lives are out of control he holds all things together for us.

Christ Jesus is the perfecter of faith and in this season you will grow closer to Him. He doesn’t leave us alone to face tough times but is a very present help. The strength of the Lord God sustains us.

Don’t allow challenges to shake your faith or move you. The Lord will help you. He will surround you with His presence and you’ll experience the amazing peace of God.

“The Lord will also be a stronghold for the oppressed,
A stronghold in times of trouble;
Those who know your name trust in you, for you, LORD, have never forsaken those who seek you.”

Psalm 9:9-10 NIV

“I will love You, O Lord, my strength.
The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer;
My God, my strength, in whom I will trust;
My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.”

Psalm 18:1-2 NKJV

By ourselves, we can’t overcome the challenges of this life. That’s why we have a Savior. We need to pray and trust God to be our source of strength. He is our Rock and is always faithful to answer our prayers in times of need.

“My flesh and my heart fail;
But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”

Psalm 73:26 NKJV

“My soul is weary with sorrow;
 strengthen me according to your word.”

Psalm 119:28 NIV

These Strength Psalms remind us that our flesh is weak and our hearts are deceptive. In tough times, they will fail us and even feed us lies from the enemy. But we can call God even during the most stressful days and He will provide incredible strength to sustain us.

6 Psalms of Hope Amid Hard Times

Life is full of tough seasons. Being a believer doesn’t exempt us from that. The difference is we have hope in Christ Jesus. When we go through the hard times, He will carry us and strengthen us.

He will never leave us nor forsake us. There’s a time for everything under the sun but no season lasts forever. A tough season is just that: a season.

“Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.”

Psalm 37:4 ESV

“Lord, You have heard the desire of the humble;
You will prepare their heart;
You will cause Your ear to hear.”

Psalm 10:17 NKJV

The loving Father is attentive and hears our cries. He prepares us for the answers to our prayers. He knows the desires of our heart and when we abide in him, remain humble and patient, he will give us what we need.

“I wait for the Lord, my soul waits,
and in his word I hope.”

Psalms 130:5 ESV

Waiting on the Lord is not easy. But through the power of the Holy Spirit, we can wait with a good attitude and hope trusting that what God has promised. Draw strength from Him, not from yourself.

“I would have lost heart, unless I had believed
That I would see the goodness of the Lord
In the land of the living.”

Psalm 27:13 NKJV

What a wonderful promise and psalm of strength. The everlasting God promises that he will not withhold any good thing from his children. God’s love for us is amazing. As long as we stay with Him, we’re guaranteed an amazing future on earth and in eternity too.

“The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears,
And delivers them out of all their troubles.
The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart,
And saves such as have a contrite spirit.”
Many are the afflictions of the righteous,
But the Lord delivers him out of them all.

Psalm 34:17-19 NKJV

“Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob,
whose hope is in the Lord their God.
He is the Maker of heaven and earth,
the sea, and everything in them—
he remains faithful forever.”

Psalms 146:5-6 NIV

The God of hope will sustain us in difficult times. As you meditate on the word of the Lord, even in the most difficult circumstances, He will deliver you in your time of need. He is the Creator of heaven and earth and remains faithful even when we are not faithful. All we need to do is wait upon the Him patiently.

4 Psalms for Strength and Courage

The sovereign Lord gives us courage during our spiritual failings, emotional distress, or physical challenges. God never walks away from us instead He carries us.

May these cries for strength and God’s aid pour off the page of the Bible into your heart. We need to be bold and courageous when going through hard seasons. These powerful inspirational psalms will guide us on how to do just that.

“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?”

Psalm 27:1 ESV

“Be of good courage,
And He shall strengthen your heart,
All you who hope in the Lord.”

Psalm 31:24 NKJV

“In the day when I cried out, You answered me,
And made me bold with strength in my soul.”

Psalm 138:3 NKJV

“Wait on the Lord;
Be of good courage,
And He shall strengthen your heart;
Wait, I say, on the Lord!”

Psalm 27:14 NKJV

These verses remind us to put our hope in God always. When we do, we will not be afraid but we will persevere through challenges as God strengthens us. Even in dark times, God is our light and our salvation. We become bold because of Him.

5 Psalms for Comfort and Strength

Throughout the Book of Psalms, we see how David sang and rejoiced in the Lord. He knew that God was always good and merciful. God was his helper, defense, and refuge. God’s presence gave him comfort when times were hard.

“The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths
for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk
through the darkest valley,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely your goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”

Psalm 23 NIV

Psalm 23 is one of the most popular chapters in the Bible. It’s a powerful passage during spiritual battles. It assures us that through the valleys of life, the Lord’s presence and righteous right hand will uphold and sustain us.

He offers us comfort, and guidance, refreshes us, and His mercy and goodness continue to be with us.

“The Lord is my strength and my shield;
My heart trusted in Him, and I am helped;
Therefore my heart greatly rejoices,
And with my song I will praise Him.”

Psalm 28:7 NKJV

“Happy are those who hear the joyful call to worship,
for they will walk in the light of your presence, Lord.”

Psalm 89:15 NLT

In this Psalm of praise, we are encouraged to know that the joy of the Lord is our strength. He makes our path light and His presence surrounds us.

“I will lift up my eyes to the hills—
From whence comes my help?
My help comes from the Lord,
Who made heaven and earth.”

Psalm 121:1-2 NKJV

“From the end of the earth I will cry to You,
When my heart is overwhelmed;
Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.”

Psalm 61:2 NKJV

Our Helper Jesus Christ, died on the Cross for us to live a victorious life in Him. We need to abide in His Word and put all our hope and trust in Him. He’ll never disappoint us.

    Ahh, But God…And God…For God…Then God. I love how we see God working in all types of circumstances–but no matter what, it all comes down to Him. It’s incredibly encouraging to see all of David’s emotions clearly written in the Psalms–and to know that God wants us to come to Him. Thanks for the reminder!

    Emmanuel, God with us! I love the name of your blog! At least your title makes me think of the word Emmanuel. The 8 Psalms you chose to encourage us for strength in tough times are perfect! Your beginning verse really sets the stage because David is our best example showing us that we must encourage ourselves in the Lord. As much as my husband makes me laugh and fills my life with joy and love, he cannot come even close to what the Lord does in my heart, soul and mind when I need strength to get through another day. Beautiful, outstanding post! Thank you!

    It’s true what you said about Christians not being exempt from tough times. These days a false gospel is being preached that says that “if you want a better life, just come to Jesus”. That’s not a gospel that saves. That said, thank you for this list of Psalms to encourage me when I walk through storms.
