The best way to prepare our kids for the start of a new school year is through the words of God. When we prioritize our Heavenly Father’s word above all else, we show our obedience and love for Him. He then blesses us and answers our prayers.

The world we live in makes corrupt talk sound so normal. But we want to raise kids who are different. Kids that honor God and speak words full of grace and kindness to those around them. 

“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”

The enemy is looking for someone to destroy and our back-to-school prayers are a way we can ask the Lord to protect them. When they are wise, alert, and intentional about their friends, the Lord will direct and lead their path at school.

This is such a great back-to-school Bible verse. For us to raise wise kids who make good decisions, they need to have the fear of the Lord and accept instruction from those in authority. 

“But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”

2 Corinthians 12:9 ESV

This is one of my favorite back to school scripture quotations. God’s grace will be sufficient for our kids even in their weakness. He is not expecting them to be perfect and neither should we. His power will work through them to fulfill His purpose and plans for their lives. 

Great Scriptures to Seek God first 

When we surrender to God’s leading and direction, and put Him first, we will be blessed in all we do. These verses are a reminder for our kids to prioritize God’s will, purpose, and plans first above their own.

 “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

Matthew 6:33 ESV

We need to remind our children as they go back to school to put God first and teach them that when we do He is faithful to answer our prayers. 

“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”

1 Corinthians 10:31 NIV

Everything we do has to be for the glory of God. This is a great verse to speak over our children so that they are intentional about everything they do at school, at home and everywhere they go really. 

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths.”

Proverbs 3:5-6 NKJV

This is one of those great scriptures our children need to memorize and know. When we trust in the Lord, not our own strategies and plans, He directs our paths.

He will lead them to make good decisions, find good friends, have good grades, and more. He is faithful to bless us when we obey Him and prioritize Him.

“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”

Good behavior starts in the students’ minds. As our children head back at the start of the school year, let’s encourage them to be intentional about what they allow into their minds because that will affect their behavior and ultimately their life.

The Bible tells us to only have thoughts that are positive and pleasing to the Lord.

The faith of our kids will grow, the more they hear the word of God not only from their Sunday School teachers but from us as their parents at home. These are great verses to pray and say over our kids to grow spiritually.

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

2 Timothy 3:16-17 NIV

The Holy Bible is there to teach, train, guide, and correct us so that we walk on the right path in life. Our children need God’s word more than ever so that they are equipped for life’s ups and downs. 

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.”

Galatians 5:22-23 NKJV

When the Holy Spirit lives within our children, they produce fruit for all to see. We need to cultivate the fruit of the Spirit in them so that it can benefit those around them at school as well as in the home, church, and community.

 “In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”

1 Thessalonians 5:18 NKJV

Gratitude is one of the key ways we grow in our faith. Teaching our kids to give thanks in all situations knowing that God is still sovereign and trusting His plan no matter what the circumstances are helps them to be obedient to our Heavenly Father’s will.

“But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.”

John 1:12 -13 ESV

This powerful verse is a reminder of our children’s identity in Christ. They are His, born of of will of God as long as they believe in His name and receive the Lord Jesus Christ as their Savior. 

“And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. “

Matthew 18:3-4 NIV

Children are a treasure in God’s kingdom and in fact He instructs us to be like them. They trust their parents and guardians wholeheartedly, they are forgiving, honest, and pure.

We can learn a lot from them and as they head back to school our prayer should be that they continue to be true to themselves and who God created them to be.

Part of being a Christian is intentionally turning away from what is worldly and seeking to obey the Lord. God’s word changes our children from the inside out as it’s a solid foundation to do great things at school and in the world in obedience to God’s laws.

In the past years, we’ve seen harmful events such as the global pandemic, cyber-bullying, and school shootings threatening our children’s safety.

We need to declare the protection of God over them daily. He will protect them mentally, emotionally, and physically.

I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”

Psalm 91: 1-2 NIV

We can’t be everywhere with our kids but our Heavenly Father can. He is sovereign and in control, so we can surrender our kids into His loving arms to take care of them.

Our Pastor asked us to pray Psalm 91 daily during the pandemic. There is comfort in declaring that the Lord is our place of safety, shelter, refuge, and place of rest.

“Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. “

Ephesians 6:11 NIV

The enemy’s wicked schemes and plans may be to destroy our children but when they put on the armor of God, He will ensure their victory. They will be able to stand firm against Him and praise the name of the Lord even at school.
