5 Great Bible Verses about Joy

Have you experienced joy lately? Or has the weight of the pandemic, global financial crisis, elections and health challenges stolen your joy? I’m here to remind you that God wants you to experience joy. These 5 Bible verses about joy in the Lord will encourage you to seek and experience joy again no matter what season of life you find yourself in.

What is the meaning of Joy?

But first we need to know what is joy? When you experience joy you experience pleasure, delight, happiness, like you’re on top of the world. You want to stay in that moment forever. But remember joy can be stolen. If you’ve been feeling down for a while its important to identify what is stealing your joy and tackle it head on.

Joy in the Lord doesn’t mean that problems are absent. It just means we choose to trust God despite the problems. We choose to believe God’s word and promises. It’s a shift in focus from the problem to the Ultimate Provider of solutions and peace through it all.

There are many free and simple ways to choose joy even during hard times.

Why is joy important?

Joy is important because we have only one life to live. We can’t spend that life being sad, angry and frustrated. We need to enjoy it. We need to be grateful for the one life we have. God wants us to experience joy and the Bible verses about joy will show us just that.

Joy is important because it ministers to unbelievers. Your joy even in the midst of difficult and frustrating circumstances can serve as a powerful testimony of your faith in God. Having joy is practicing and living out your faith.

5 Great Bible Verses about Joy

1. Always Rejoice

“Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice!”

Philippians 4:4 (NKJV)

This is one short and sweet verse about joy that’s also easy to memorize. To rejoice is to feel great joy. Paul wrote the book of Philippians while he was in jail. It’s so encouraging to me how he was able to remain so positive and share about joy even while he was bound in chains.

But I want you to know, brethren, that the things which happened to me have actually turned out for the furtherance of the gospel, so that it has become evident to the whole palace guard, and to all the rest, that my chains are in Christ; and most of the brethren in the Lord, having become confident by my chains, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.”

Philippians 1:12-14

We can definitely learn that joy is not found in physical circumstances. It must be deeper than that. Joy is experienced when your heart is resting and trusting in Jesus Christ. Paul shows us that knowing that your negative circumstances are for a season and reason to bring glory to God can help you remain joyful always.

2. Joy is a fruit

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,”

Galatians 5:22

Joy is a product of the Holy Spirit. It’s when we take time to feed our souls with God’s word that we are filled with His joy. The joy that only He can give us. Bearing the fruit of the Spirit is a result of spending time with Him in the word, prayer and fellowship with other believers.

3. Joy is in God

“You will show me the path of life;
In Your presence is fullness of joy;
At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”

Psalm 16:11

When we are in God’s presence we experience amazing and full joy in Him. Just like Adam and Eve did in the beginning. It’s when they departed and ran away from God that they experienced shame, guilt, frustration and broke their relationship with God.

But we don’t have to leave God’s presence no matter what. God is always there, waiting to welcome and fellowship with us anytime.

God shows us the path of life in His word. We have a blueprint to follow. At no point do we need to be lost or confused. That brings us great joy!

4. Joy is in the Kingdom

“for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.”

Romans 14:17

It’s important to remember that Christianity is not a religion but a kingdom. God is the King. An amazing King I might add. While we are His servants in His Kingdom we are also His children and friends. Pretty cool, right?

God’s kingdom is not just about enjoying the physical gifts like eating and drinking. Its about way more than that. It’s about being righteous and having peace and joy. That’s what God promises us in His Kingdom. As long as we stay in the Holy Spirit we will experience peace and joy.

5. Joy is in our faith

whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory,

1 Peter 1:8

This is powerful verse about our faith and joy in Jesus, whom we have not seen yet we love. That’s because we see the evidence of His love for us on the Cross. And unlike Thomas, we don’t need to know He is physically here. We believe He is always there by faith. And that brings us inexpressible joy.

My Encouragement to You

I know that experiencing joy is not easy. But these Bible verses about joy show us that it’s possible and it’s what God wants for us. Step-by-step, day-by-day as we stay in God’s presence, in Word and prayer we will experience the fullness of His joy.

Let’s Pray

Heavenly Father, I thank You for your wonderful love and presence in my life. Today I confess that there are things which have been stealing my joy such as ______,_____,_____,_____ and ______. I want to experience true joy in you.

Help me daily to choose joy no matter what my circumstances are. I want to trust You more and more. Thank you for hearing my prayers always.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen
