6 Beautiful Benefits of Loving God’s word

She was born on a sunny Wednesday morning in November. When I looked at her, my heart melted. She wasn’t my first but even as my second I knew my heart would expand to give her all the love she needed.

Her name is Tianna and she’s our 2nd princess. As I write this, she’s 4 months old. As any mom would tell you, I can go on and on to tell you more about my baby girl.

I could tell you how I wake up to her giggling all by herself, how she looks adoringly at her 5 year old sister-who is a true entertainer of note, and how she loves to suck her cute little fingers.

I can tell you all of those things and more

But I want to focus on one thing she desires, and that’s milk! And the Bible confirms that babies desire milk. 1 Peter 2:2 says, ‘as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby,’.

As I’ve been enjoying months of nursing and snuggling this little one, I’ve observed some key lessons about this verse. We are called to desire the pure milk of the word just like newborns.

The reality is we can only desire something we love, something that will benefit us. Once we know the beautiful benefits of the word, it will be easier for us to desire and love it.

6 Beautiful Benefits of God’s word

1. We can 100% depend on God’s word

#Truth Bomb1: It doesn’t matter if a newborn is born to a billionaire or pauper, as soon as they come out they need milk.

Newborns don’t need their parents money, they don’t need a car, they don’t even need a college fund. When a baby is born, all they cry for is milk.

In the same way, God calls us to desire His Word and depend on it to survive and thrive in this world, just like a newborn baby desires and depends on milk 100%.

Psalm 42:1-2 “As the deer pants for the water brooks, So pants my soul for You, O God.My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.When shall I come and appear before God?

2. The word of God is pure

The milk a baby drinks is free from any dirt. It’s pure. Just like the word of God which is pure.

Proverbs 30:5 says, “Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him.”

#TruthBomb2: The verse starts by talking about the word of God which is pure. Then the word is addressed as a person ‘He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him’.

So the word is a person? Mm-mm, yes.

John 1:14 says “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”

The word is pure, the word is Jesus Christ, our perfect Saviour. Receive the word as our Pure Savior and you’ll start to really desire it. I mean Him.

3.The word protects and cleanses us

A baby is born fragile and vulnerable to diseases and infections all around her. Breastmilk especially has been proven to reduce the risks a baby faces and protect the baby from all those sicknesses.

In the same way, the word of God cleanses us from all unrighteousness and it protects us from the devil and all his ways.

Psalm 46:1 says “God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble”

John 15:3 says, “You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you”

4.The word soothes and comforts us

Not only when they are born, but even as they grow, newborns really do rely on milk to comfort them when they’re upset, hungry or cold.

It’s a tough world for them when they come out. Everything is so new to them. But the moment you give them milk, they are soothed and comforted.

The word of God comforts us and soothes us no matter what we’re going through. That’s a beautiful benefit.

2 Thessalonians 2:16-17, “Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, and our God and Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting consolation and good hope by grace, comfort your hearts and establish you in every good word and work.”

5.The word strengthens our bond with God

As I’ve nursed my baby these past few months, an unbreakable bond has formed between us. She recognises my voice even when she can’t see me.

As we depend on God’s word and meet with Him daily in His word, we form an unbreakable bond with Him. We understand what He wants us to do, His will and our purpose in life.

Psalm 145: 18, “The Lord is near to all who call upon Him, To all who call upon Him in truth.”

The Lord is close to us when we call upon His name in truth.

#TruthBomb3: Truth is a person. His name is Jesus Christ. When you call upon God in truth (in Jesus Christ/in The Word) God will draw near to you.

John 14: 6, “Jesus said to him, “I am the waythe truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”

# TruthBomb4: The whole Bible is about Jesus Christ. From Genesis to Revelations.

6.The word helps us GROW spiritually

I’m in awe of my baby’s growth. By the time I took her for her 2nd month vaccination, she had already doubled her birth weight. All of this just from breastmilk!

In the same way, there is no way we will feed from the word of God and not grow spiritually.

But what if this desire and love for God’s word is not there?

The answer is reading the entire context of the scripture. 1 Peter 2:1-3 “Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.”

1.Lay aside sin: deceit, malice, hypocrisy, envy and evil speaking. We need to watch what we say, what we listen to and watch our actions.

If our words and actions are not pleasing to God, we will find ourselves not desiring the spiritual milk. Sin easily entangles us and makes us desire more of the world not the Word.

2.Is Jesus Christ your personal Lord and Saviour? I Peter 2v3 says ‘if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious’

If we have experienced God’s grace and amazing love, we will have the desire to meet with Him daily. We might not do it as diligently as we would like, but the desire will be there.

And the more we read the word of God and experience it’s beautiful benefits, the more we will love it!

My encouragement to you

The Word of God, is Jesus Christ, the word that became flesh. When we love His word, we love the person of Jesus Christ. And when we seek Him with all of our hearts we find Him.

There are so many amazing benefits of God’s word. It’s dependable, it’s pure, it protects, cleanses, soothes and comforts. The word strengthens our bond with God and helps us grow spiritually. What an honour and priviledge we have!

Let’s pray

Lord Jesus, thank you that you are the Word, you are the truth, you are my strength, my comforter and my shield. Help me to desire your word daily because it has so many benefits. I love you Lord and I desire to grow close with you daily.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen

It is hard to get disciplined to study God’s word every day. I have joined a Bible study so that I am accountable to do it. I love to lay in bed and talk to God though. I talk to Him all day.
