Have you been going to church Sunday after Sunday, felt close to God but then you went back home and on Monday you wondered where that feeling even went?
When you’re at church you meet with other believers, dance, worship, pray to God, hear a powerful sermon and feel great and close to God. All is good with the world on Sunday.
But Monday comes and the hustle and bustle of everyday life starts- work, family, friends, TV, sleep and so the rest of the week goes by.
And by Thursday you are so overwhelmed with the busyness of life you have lost touch with God and are just waiting for Sunday to have that feeling of closeness with God again?
You start to feel that Sunday is the only time you are a ‘real Christian’. And everyday of the week… well you’re living your life just like everyone else, even unbelievers.
All this leads you to realise there’s no spiritual growth in your life. You’re battling the same sins and struggles and not overcoming. It seems like the norm but you desire a better life.
Life with God HAS to be better and you know it. You desire it. You desire to walk in VICTORY. And you want to feel close with God every day. But is it possible?
You are not alone. I know the feeling. And a lot of Christians I know feel the same way you do (whether they admit it or not) .
But don’t despair! I’ve learnt a few simple and easy secrets along the way to get us all out of this place. And I’m sharing them with you!
The reality is you will not grow if your spirit is only fed on Sunday. If you want that much needed Sunday feeling everyday of the week, I’ve got you covered!
Truth Bomb: God is not only found in the church building. He is not confined to it. We don’t serve a Sunday service God.
6 Simple And Easy Secrets To Spiritual Growth
1. Change your perspective
God is not only found in church. His presence is everywhere. He cares about all aspects of your life not just your church attendance and participation.
He is interested in your relationships, your work, your home, your friendships and your to-do-list. All these are opportunities to invite God into your day. Read more about connecting with God in this post.
Psalm 139:3 says “You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways“
Job 34: 21 “His eyes are on the ways of mortals; he sees their every step”
2. Desire to meet God by yourself
Being with other believers is great! Everyone likes to be with people they share common beliefs with. Conversations just flow when you feel connected.
But the secret to spiritual growth is to have the desire to connect with God by yourself.
Matthew 6: 6 says ‘But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.’
3. Create the church atmosphere at home
Here’s the secret I’ve learnt. In church:
- We praise and worship God
- We pray
- We invite His presence
- We thank God for what He’s doing through testimonies
- We read the word of God in the Bible
And guess what-God shows up! And we have the great moments and feelings of being close with Him and feeling His presence at church.
We need to create the same environment at home. How? Though prayer, worship and His word.
- Worship- Personally I love music so I’ve learnt at home to find a quiet moment (usually early mornings before everyone wakes up), put on my favourite worship songs on my phone, put on my earphone and get into the presence of God.
- Prayer- When I start worshiping, before I know it, I’m praying, thanking God, and getting that same exact feeling I had on Sunday!
4. Read your Bible at home
If you wait to read your Bible when the preacher tells you to open it at church, you will never grow spiritually. It’s that simple I’m afraid.
I know because I was that girl who only opened their Bible at church and wondering why I wasn’t growing spiritually
Until I started studying the word by myself. Sometimes when I don’t understand what I’m studying, I take those questions to the Pastor at our church.
The more hunger you have for the word of God by yourself, during the week, the more you will get that Sunday feeling you crave for. And you will experience spiritual growth.
1 Peter 2:2 “as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby”
5. Find moments to keep hearing God’s word during the week
When I’m at work, sometimes I put my headphones on and just work while listening to online sermons.
When I’m in my car going to and from work, I listen to the audio Bible or a Christian podcast. I recommend Chystal Evans Hurst’s podcast called Chrystal’s Chronicles. She’s my absolute favourite!
When I’m scrolling my social media pages I sometimes stop at my favourite preachers facebook/ instagram pages and watch short videos of their latest messages. All this helps me to keep hearing the Word throughout the week.
What is one way you could incorporate listening to God’s word as you do daily tasks?
6. Make time for God everyday
Church has a scheduled time and a routine. We need the same at home to experience spiritual growth. Have a set time to meet with God daily.
With a newborn now, I know I’m STILL struggling with this one and if you are too, I have hope for you.
Find time with God- 10 minutes here and there throughout the day is better than waiting for a ‘perfect time’ where the house is quiet, you have a special notebook and pen, you are at peace etc.
Your time could be when you’re cooking and listening to your sermon or driving the kids to school and getting into worship. What matters is to make time and connect with God daily not just on Sundays.
My Encouragement to you:
I want to get that Sunday feeling every single day! I know you do too. And guess what else- that’s exactly what God wants for His children. Daily connection with Him which will lead to spiritual growth.
When we make time for God during the week for prayer, worship, reading His word, hearing sermons surely this will happen for us. And we will realise that we don’t serve a Sunday only God but a God who is always with us everyday and in everything we do.
Lord I thank you for my life and all that you have done for me and continue to do. You are my Savior, Helper, Friend and Redeemer. Thank you that your presence is always with me. I want to grow spiritually and become close to you. Help me to commit daily to connect with you. I love you Lord.
In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
