Busy moms guide to finding prayer time daily

‘I wish I prayed more but I’m too busy to pray’. Almost all busy moms I know, including myself wish they could pray more. With our time and days split between home life, work life, church and everything else that begs for our attention, prayer can seem like the last thing we can do. I mean prayer doesn’t even appear on our daily or weekly to do list.

Now I will confess to one thing about myself. I’m not a morning person. And I struggle to pray before I sleep. My workday is 10-12 hours long so I’m usually too exhausted to pray by the time my head hits that pillow.

So l have struggled with consistency in my prayer life.

But I will tell you one thing, I have learnt the power of short, daily, consistent prayers during the day. Talking to God continuously throughout the day is the answer to finding the time to pray.

Ephesians 6:18a says ‘With all prayer and petition pray [with specific requests] at all times [on every occasion and in every season] in the Spirit,’  And with that said, we’ve been given permission to talk to God daily, and anytime during the day – about everything.

Here is the busy moms guide to finding prayer time daily:

1. As soon as you wake up.

It’s important to thank God for the gift of life and an opportunity to be alive as soon as you wake up. Think of it this way ‘Somewhere in a hospital the life machine has been switched off and in another place someone died while they were sleeping ‘ And here you are alive and well. It’s a miracle, that’s what it is. So thank God first thing in the morning!

2. In the shower

Normally I think about my outfit for the day as I shower if I haven’t done so the night before. And I also pray for the day ahead with all its activities and challenges.

3. While putting on clothes and make up

I’ve placed verses on my wardrobe that l read and pray over as I’m dressing up. I also pray for the day ahead. Sometimes l listen to my favourite worship music and pray over the lyrics in the song.

4. Drive to work

This is probably the longest and best time l pray. I have a 30-45 minute drive to the office and I pray for my day at work, pray for patience during the traffic jams. I also pray for anything that I’ve been worrying over or wishing for instead of praying for.

5. Bathroom breaks at work

I pray in the bathroom-yes I do. Sometimes it’s the only alone time that I get so I take it (even at home). And I used to think it’s weird, but not after I read one of my favourite verses in the Bible: 1 Thessalonians 5: 17 ‘Pray without ceasing’. That is to say Pray. All. The.Time. Without stopping. So yes I pray in the bathroom as well. It also helps me pray immediately for any immediate challenges I have at work.

6. Drive back from work

Again this is another 30 minute trip and I usually put on my Gospel music and pray thanking God for the day.

7. Before l sleep

I usually thank God for the day and ask for His protection throughout the night. This can be a short or long prayer.

My encouragement to you

As a busy mom, my desire is to pray more just like you. And while l know people who wake up daily in the early morning to pray and I desire to do that myself, I’m not there-yet. I also know that some people pray only at night. But one thing I know and can assure you of is that God hears and answers all prayers. He is a God who is omnipresent. So don’t be discouraged if you as a busy mom can’t keep a consistent prayer time, rather focus on making sure you connect with God daily.

Let’s Pray:

Heavenly Father, thank you that I can pray to you at any time. Help me to find consistency in my prayer time so I can connect with you daily. Show me and guide me through the times I should be praying. Give me a desire to grow in prayer so I can lead a victorious and joyful life in you.

In Jesus name I pray. Amen

Thanks for the ideas! I feel like prayer time (and personal time) are always the first to go when my routine gets squeezed. These are perfect reminders that there is always time for prayer even in the busiest or most mundane moments of life.

Thank you for this post, very encouraging. I find devotions in the morning are very rushed. I pray in the shower too, on the bus and train ride. Also pray during the day at work, this has gone the way of the dodoo bird lately, too busy at work. Will adopt some of the other points too. Thanks again, going to share this post

Great ideas Tinashe. It’s true when you talk to God all the time , you hardly have time to worry. I’m definitely one of those people who want more prayer time. Will be making use of the above prayer times. Thanks for reminding me, what it really means ,in practical terms , to pray without ceasing

Connecting with God – no matter which religion you are a part of, clearly DOES NOT take time. We as humans have made this a BIG deal out of this – God is as near to us as our own existence. And all we need to do is reach out… Be it for as little as saying thank you to Him, once a day for all the blessings He has given us…

Gratitude brings us closer to God.. for it helps us realize all those tiny little things, which we take for granted every day, as HUGE blessings, because that’s why they really are… for instance waking up itself, many don’t get that chance as well, opening eyes and being able to see, being able to walk, having loved ones around to reach out to etc.

So I think, if we just develop a habit to say Thank you to Him daily for the blessings, each day we will be able to reach out to Him so many times, that is beyond our imagination… because saying Thank you does not take long and there you go, you have opened an endless communication channel with your Creator 🙂

Lovely writing Tinashe. Keep it up 🙂
